Geocache Description:

North West England, or just The North West, is one of the nine official regions of England and comprises five counties Cheshire, Cumbria, Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Merseyside. It is the third most populated region (with almost 7 million inhabitants) after London and the South East, with a high proportion of its population being based around the cities of Liverpool and Manchester.

The North West is bounded on the east by the Peak District and the Pennines, whilst to the west is the Irish Sea. To the North are the Scottish Borders and to the south the English Midlands, whilst its south west corner borders North Wales. Amongst the better known of the North West's features are the Cheshire Plain and the Lake District containing the highest peak in England - Scafell Pike at 3,209 feet.

In August 2012, The North West is inviting the geocaching community to the UK Mega Event at Cartmel racecourse in Cumbria. As well as the racecourse, Cartmel is now famous for its “sticky toffee pudding".

The ancient village of Cartmel has the fabulous 12th Century Cartmel Priory, with its beautiful stained glass windows, modern sculptures, and ancient choir stalls. Leading off the village square, with its market cross, water pump, and fish slabs, is the Cartmel Priory Gatehouse, now a Heritage Centre which depicts the history of the monastery, and the village. The village also houses a variety of interesting shops and traditional pubs around its main square. Around the square, and in the narrow winding streets leading from it, are a variety of ancient and interesting buildings… and of course in 2012, we must not forget that the village if Cartmel is the location for the UK Mega Event!

This cache is one of a series of six located on Wirral in the run up to the UK Mega Event, and their publication coincide with the Picnic on Hilbre Island Event being held by the North West Mega Team. The five county caches (3” x 3” x 2” snap’n’lok boxes) each contain details written under their lids that will help you locate the final Cartmel cache (a screw-top beaker). Each of the six caches contains a winner’s medallion and a special ‘themed’ prize for the FTF.

This final ‘Cartmel’ cache is not at the listed co-ordinates. In order to find it you will first have to find the five county caches which contain details (written under their lids). Once you have collected all the information, the cache will be found at N 53° 2A.BCD W 003° 0E.FGH

As always, be on the lookout for muggles as all the locations in the series are frequented by children, dog walkers etc, and ensure the caches are properly hidden afterwards with appropriate camouflage.

More details can be found at North West Mega. Hopefully you’ll be able to come to this mega event that is showcasing geocaching in the North West of England.
