Be advised, this is NOT a "no-brainer". It's a geocaching challenge for sure. The cache in Part Two has nice stash plus valuable prizes. The coordinates given above are for the purpose of anchoring this listing to Fairport, N.Y. where the Solution Keys are. Part One here is a "Virtual Cache" where you will develop four Clues to be used in Part Two. Four coordinates are mentioned in Steps 1 through 4. You DO NOT have to travel to these places to answer the questions! All the coordinates are in the standard GPS convention (Hddº mm.mmm'; Hdddº mm.mmm' Datum wgs84). Use all the resources of the internet, your GPS, library books and your Aunt Polly's travel memoirs to find the four Names first. You'll need all four Clues developed from these Names to go on to the cache. The additional information in Steps 1-4 can be used to confirm your answer. Some, like Name #1, are pretty obscure but it CAN be traced to the supporting information once you have the Name if you want to confirm it. Others like Name #2 or #4 and you might say "Oh yea, that's fits!". Without a good working knowledge of latitude/longitude coordinates, you probably can't get to the Names. So, good luck! (You'll need it!)
Ready? Here we go!
1. Town located exactly 15 miles almost due west of this familiar named place: N39º 54.649'; W094º 41.084'. A tributary of the Missouri River and a Navy-owned, WW II, gasoline tanker (class AOG) share this same unusual Indian name. What's the town's name? (Name #1)
2. County located at N38º 32.029'; W085º 16.856'. A GPS company shares this name. What's the county's name? (Name #2)
3. His grave and memorial are at N36º 19.143'; W095º 37.868'. He was an Indian, a cowboy and a legend. He starred in over 70 movies. A world airport is named after him. His mother was Mary America. What was his first name? (Name #3)
4. Town located exactly 551.8 kilometers due west of this location: N43º 24.651'; E003º 24.766'. A former TV show, truck tires and an SUV share this name. What's the town's name? (Name #4)
The easy part:
5. Clue #1 is the first three letters of Name #1: __ __ __
6. Clue #2 is the last five letters of Name #2: __ __ __ __ __
7. Clue #3 is the first four letters of Name #3: __ __ __ __
8. Clue #4 is the last five letters of Name #4: __ __ __ __ __
9. You now have the makings of the coordinates to get to the cache. The coordinates are: Latitude = Clue #1 º & Clue #2 '; Longitude = Clue #3 º & Clue #4 '. Clues # 1 & # 3 are the degrees. Clues # 2 & # 4 are the minutes; just place a decimal point in the appropriate 3rd place for those.
EXAMPLE: NVTº KH.THV'; WKHHº TJ.RVT'
You have an all-letter coordinate that will be converted in Part Two. Please enter a successful visit here saying only that you're "On To Part Two".
Now go (yes, drive) to Part Two in Fairport, N.Y. for the Solution Keys. You may save some time by inputting the waypoints listed in Steps 10 through 27 into your GPS now. They are located at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery. [From S. Main St. (Rt. 250) & W. Church St. (Rt. 31-F) go south 1/4 mile on 250 and turn left on Summit St. Go east 1/10 mile to the cemetery entrance at the water tower on the left. Park in the middle of the cemetery at N43º 05.762'; W077º 26.270' for convenience.] If there are other cachers there, I'd suggest coming back tomorrow. At least, please work independently. Don't use the encrypted hints below unless absolutely necessary. (Makes it too easy! ) Good luck! The prizes are waiting!
