“North?” she questioned, not really listening as she carried on pinning her faded, and slightly grey smalls to the already full washing line. Ethel was talking to her next-door neighbour Maude, over the rotting, but-I’ll-paint-it-anyway garden fence. It was a lovely summer’s day and Ethel was making the most of it. “Yes!” said Maude irritated now, “it’s the only direction you can go, when you’re at the south pole”.

Maude’s son, Ferdinand, was on a polar expedition. 30 years old, or so Maude liked to think, and still not sure just exactly what he wanted out of life. Other than to be stuck at the south pole.

“When is he coming home?”, enquired Ethel. “That”, said Maude matter of factly, “I’m not sure of, you see, he uses this satellite thingy or some such device which turns what he says into a tele-message”.
“A tele what?”, said Ethel flatly.
“A tele-message”, replied Maude, almost shouting now.
“Here, I’ll go and get it. See if you can make anything from it. It’s all double Dutch to me”.

And with that she disappeared into the house, returning a few minutes later with a piece of paper……

Initially, they had exchanged muddled ideas. She shrugged, insisting, "Neither gold nor old silver are reward enough to help, Ethel". Neither of our feeble ladies eventually thought to exercise reason.
Surely initially now there’s hope enough. Would others realise?
Dear old Ferdinand travelled, ensuring xmas tidings survived. How others would not believe? You too have enough presence of spirit. In the ice of north or further toward home, everyone loves England.
To test everyone’s readiness, only now the hidden event kept everyone yearning. But, oh, a real dilemma.
