Maiden Rock on Lake Pend Oreille. Nice and challenging hike or quick boat trip.
ACCESS: From Highway 95 take the Blacktail Creek Road cutoff to the east (11 miles south of Sandpoint, just south of Cocolalla Lake). Drive 1.5 miles to Butler Creek Road 230 and turn left then 2.7 miles to the end of the road. Follow the signs to Trail 321 Maiden Creek. Hike 1.5 miles to Lake Pend Oreille. This old indian trail begins at 3200 feet elevatiion and drops to 2200 feet. Nice going downhill, all uphill going back (hike is rated as most difficult by the US Forest Service). Beautiful scenery leading to a nice beach and picnic area. Maiden Rock is so named as it has the contour of a woman (not a babe by any means) seen from a certain place on the lake. Lots of loose rocks makes it dangerous to climb to the mountain top. For boaters, a launch at Garfield Bay means a 8 mile run to the south. The lake is over a 1000 feet deep in this area.
