The year 2004 marks the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the first Acadians in North America. They settled in a land they called Acadie, in what is now Nova Scotia. They befriended the local Míqmak and lived in relative peace for a century and a half, when they were all deported to foreign lands. After a decade in exile, many returned to Acadie, and today live throughout the Maritimes. Others are scattered throughout the world: some in Louisiana and other parts of the US; some returned to France; others are even known to live in Ottawa.
