The Lakewood Veterans Memorial was dedicated in May 2003. In order to determine the cache location, you'll need to play a few games of "Duck, Duck, Goose" with the main sculpture.
What? You don't remember how to play "Duck, Duck, Goose"? Let me refresh your memory. If you still need help, see if you can get a game started at the next WSGA meeting.
You're "it". As you walk clockwise around a circle of people, you tap them on the head one by one, saying "duck." Eventually, you get bored with saying "duck" and decide to tap a person on the head and say "goose". You then run around the circle of people as fast as you can, with the "goose" chasing you, and after one complete circle, you take the goose's spot in the circle, and the goose becomes the new "it." If the goose tags you before you get the goose's spot, you're still it.
(Can you tell my wife is a preschool teacher?)
Well, in this game, you're playing with statues behind a fence, so you can't really tag them (if you do, I don't want to know about it.) They won't really chase you (if they do, I don't want to know about it). Assume you're slower than they are (if you are, I don't want to know about it), and you get tagged by them every time.
Count the number of "ducks" each time before you get to the goose. Start at the nurse for both the latitude and the longitude. Don't count the previous goose when you start again. Remember, you're going clockwise.
The circle is nine statues consisting of (in no particular order):
- a nurse,
- a signaller,
- a paratrooper,
- a chaplain,
- a mechanic,
- a marine standing at attention,
- a soldier at attention with his rifle,
- a sailor, and
- a radio operator.
Assuming that this were the correct clockwise order, if the coordinates I give you are:
N MechanicChaplain° MechanicMarine.MechanicChaplainParatrooper (example coordinates)
this could translate to "N 47° 09.777", because there are
- 4 "ducks" before you get to the mechanic (starting with the nurse), then
- 7 "ducks" before you get to the chaplain (starting with the marine, who is next in line after the "goose" mechanic)
- 0 "ducks" before you get to the mechanic (starting with the mechanic, who is next in line after the "goose" chaplain)
- 9 "ducks" before you get to the marine (starting with the marine, who is next in line after the "goose" mechanic)
- 7 "ducks" before you get to the mechanic (starting with the soldier, who is next in line after the "goose" marine)
- 7 "ducks" before you get to the chaplain (starting with the marine, who is next in line after the "goose" mechanic)
- 7 "ducks" before you get to the paratrooper (starting with the mechanic, who is next in line after the "goose" chaplain).
Believe me, this should end up a lot easier than it sounds. Basically, you're counting the number of statues between the last goose and the next one. Note that with nine statues, "0" and "9" end up being the same, so you'll have to guess which one to use
Starting with the nurse, going clockwise, the cache latitude is:
N MechanicSoldier° MechanicChaplain.MechanicRadioSoldier
Starting with the nurse, the cache longitude is
W MarineMechanicRadio° SailorSoldier.SoldierMechanicSailor
Don't forget -- go clockwise. Once you retrieve the cache, replace it so that none of the container is visible from normal angles again.
