Geocache Description:

This Geocache is located on the western bank of a Pocono Mountain stream called the "Tobyhanna", in PA State Game Land No.127. But it's more difficult to get to than you think! Military-style cable bridge over rushing water may slow your progress!

Pocono Mountain Geocache

Going strong after all these years, the first true Pocono Mountain Geocache is contained in an ARMY issue .50 caliber ammunition case. It has been placed on the western bank of Tobyhanna Creek about 1 mile due west of several parking locations found in the vicinity on Route 423 in the Poconos Mountains. I would suggest parking anywhere south of the Geocache on 423, approach the creek first and travel north along the footpath next to the stream to reach the cache location. It's a beautiful, challenging hike and you may see a few seasoned flyfishermen on the way if it is the right season. Warning! You must first cross a military cable bridge to access this cache on the far bank of the Tobyhanna. This is no easy task. If you can not cross the bridge you will need to ford the stream further to the north. Endless hiking abounds!

OPTION TWO: (longer hike)

Approach Pocono Mountain Geocache from the west. Although I have not done this, I'm sure it would be an excellent hike. Travel farther west than 423 on PA 940 and take the public drive to Brady's Lake (also located in PA Game Land No.127). The trails which start at the northern end of this incredible clearwater lake (the "snowmobile" trails) will most likely lead to a trail right by the Pocono Mountain Geocache, but this has not been proven! The distance is 3 or 4 miles from here (as the crow flies) so count on hiking 8-10 miles for the whole trip. I would say from this side (the west) without the cable bridge, the difficulty rating should be 4, 4.

The theme for this Geocache is camping.

I have left a small camping item, and will expect you to do the same. The usual other goods are contained as well - spare batteries, a journal/log, pencils. Due with them what you will. Follow the instructions!!! There is also a bonus watercolor map pamphlet of the Poconos for the first person to reach the cache to keep.

Happy trails!
