This is another in the Tour The World Cities and Stay in Ohio Series being put out all over the state. I like these because we get information on the city in some other place of the world while we learn about our local cities.
Lima (Lee’mah), Peru is the capital and largest city in Peru. Lima is the fourth largest city in the Americas with approximately 9 million people, one third live in the metropolitan area. Lima is the largest financial hub in Latin America. Lima was founded by Spanish conquistdor Francisco Pizarro in 1535 and is the home of one of the oldest higher learning institutions in the New World, the National University of San Marcos, founded in 1551.
Lima, (Li’ma), Ohio is the county seat of Allen County located along I75, about 72 miles north of Dayton and approximately 78 miles south of Toledo. There was a population of 38,771 as of the 2010 census. The Shawnee Indians were the original settlers of this land, but they were finally forced to move to Kansas in 1831. This region suffered from a Cholera outbreak from 1854 until 1866 when a municipal water system was put in use. Lima area is lucky to have 4 great colleges and a great vocational school. The UNOH motor program gets visits from NASCAR owners and crew members looking for drivers, designers, mechanics, and crew members. Lima’s industry included Oil, the Shay gear locomotive, and the Liberty truck. Now we are mostly retail, but we still have the refinery, Ford engines and the hard working Abrams military tank is built here.
