Geocache Description:

Located at 6,250 elevation, paved road, cach within short walking distance. Fairly easy to get to. Not accessible in the winter months. campgrounds may be closed due to hazard trees because of beetle kill. If so, do not enter if gate closed due to safety issues.

Room for small trading items. Cache may not be accessible in winter due to road closure and depth of snow. Do not cross baracades if they are up and the campground is closed. A check will be made in the spring to make sure log and everything is ok. Cromwell Dixon Campground is located in Helena National Forest in Southwest Montana. The site was named after the first aviator to cross the Continental Divide (1911) North of here. Dixon took off from the fairgrounds, climbed to an altitude of 7,000 feet, and flew from Helena across the mountains to Blossberg and back, becoming the first person to cross the Continental Divide in an airplane. His feat won him international acclaim and a prize of $10,000 (about $220,000 in 2007 dollars). He died two days later in a crash of his airplane in Spokane Washington. At an elevation of 6325 feet, The Cromwell Dixon Campground covers an area of 9 acres with 14 camp sites and 9 trailer sites. The maximum trailer length is 22 feet. It is a pleasant forest setting in a group of pine trees surrounded by grasslands. Campsites are spacious. Children and pets have room to run on the prairie lands. Water and toilets are available. The duration of your stay at the campground may not exceed 14 days. Fee required.
