Geocache Description:

The coordinates above do not describe the cache site. This cache is inspired by the cache A Woman’s Touch by Peachpie (GC1920Y), but with a touch of my world, which is science. This cache is a tribute to the great women, who managed to contribute with important findings in a world traditionally dominated by men.

A: She is probably the most well-known woman in science. She was raised by poor parents, who nonetheless instilled in their children a sense of the value of learning. The death of her sister and mother made her abandon her religion and become agnostic. In the end of the 19th century she obtained her master’s degree in mathematics from a famous university. Her ground-breaking work in the field of radio-activity gave her Nobel-Prizes in both Physics and Chemistry. She was, however, unaware of the effects of working unprotected with radioactive substances, and therefore carried samples around in her pockets. At the age of 66 she died from anaemia. Two years later her oldest daughter was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

Number of siblings this woman had = A

B: This German scientist is especially well known for her monophonic music, off which approximately 80 compositions have survived. She wrote biological, medical, and theological texts, and invented an alternative alphabet. As the tenth child, she was destined for the church, and at the age of 3 she had her first vision. She is known as the greatest scientific woman of medieval times.

Year she died = B

C: She was one of the pioneers in the field of DNA. Using X-rays, she managed to determine the structure of this genetic polymer in royal surroundings, but was only mentioned in a footnote in Nature. Despite her excellent work, this British scientist did not receive the Nobel Prize in 1962, but at that time she probably didn’t care too much.

Number of papers she published the year before she died = C

D: She was probably the first female mathematician ever. She taught astronomy and philosophy and was the head of the Platonist School in Alexandria. Furthermore she invented the hydrometer, which is used to determine the relative density and gravity of liquids. She ended her life as a victim of political jealousy. She was dragged through the streets to a church, where she was set ablaze.

Number of the month she was killed = D

E: Just before the millennium, she lowered the speed of light from 300.000 km pr. second to only 17 meters pr. second. Recently she managed to momentarily stop a beam of light, move it, and then release it again, and she is now one of the hottest names in science. For several years, she has been working as a professor at Harvard University.

Year she obtained her PhD-degree in physics = E

F: This Quaker-girl decided to study medicine in 1889 and should not be mistaken with her singing namesake. She worked as a health inspector in Hell’s Kitchen, focused on the high infant mortality rate. She set up a milk station handing out pasteurized milk and aided in the prevention of blindness due to gonorrhea. She contributed enormously to improve the public health in the city. She was also the first female editor of the scientific journal Public Health.

Number of books (not including her autobiography) she wrote = F
