Indian Pond Underwater Railroad Multi-cache

This cache has been archived.

FFFarmer: After several months of deliberation we have decided to archive this cache for good. We really enjoy this area as most do who visit it. When we originally set this multi-cache up it was a two day project, we camped at the launch area and spent both days checking and re-checking co-ords, and placing all the legs. We knew this was going to be a work-out for anyone that wanted to do it and that it would be a commitment by those who did, this was not a cache that the post would read "this was #__ of several found today” if you made the commitment to find this one you would only have time for a couple others on the way in or out. We wanted to make sure that if someone made the trip here that they would not go home busted so we sealed the co-ords to each leg in the first leg with strict instructions to “only open if you cannot find the next leg” and “please put the sealed envelope back into the first leg when you are done”. You see leg 1 and leg 8 were both on the main land about 100 yards apart, and you would have to go within 10 feet of leg 1. We also had a question and answer for each leg so we knew that someone actually made an attempt to find each leg. When we read the logs in the final cache we learned that a few had gone from leg 1 to leg 8 without going on the water. After some more research we are pretty much convinced that it was human element that destroyed several legs of the cache and probably because we challenged a couple of the finds. It is unfortunate that this game is so much about “the numbers” for a few that this would take place. We will continue to visit this area on a regular basis and enjoy the history that comes with it, and maybe someday we will do something here again. Thanks to all who made the trip and enjoyed the experince, knowing that we brought you to an area you may never have visited was a great satisfaction t us.

Geocache Description:

This 8 leg multi cache starts along the once Somerset Railway in Sapling Township (see map #40 C-5 of the Maine Atlas & Gazeteer) and continues along the same railroad bed which is now underwater. This hunt will require a kayak or canoe to complete.

This island dotted pond was man made by dams in the Kennebec River. A bit of exploration around this area will show many signs of a previous life consisting of logging, river drives, sawmills, sporting camps, and of course the railroad which was started in 1872 in Oakland, Maine. This portion of the rail was built starting in 1904 and ran until 1929 when its owners died. You will also notice this pond offers numerous primitive campsites (for a small fee collected by Florida Power and Light) should you wish to stay overnight. When you have completed all of the legs and answered the questions you will need to email me those answers to confirm your visit (the reason will become obvious when you start the hunt). This hunt will take about 2 ½ to 3 hours to complete and will consist of about 3 miles of paddling. Be respectful of campers and others that might be visiting here also, park out of the way and not in a tent site.

Leg #1 is an ammo box that is on the main land and contains the coordinates for the next leg.
Legs #2 through #7 are camo taped pill bottles containing the coordinates to the next Leg as well as an answer to a question relative to that spot.
Leg #5 is two part (A & B), part B is optional due to its terrain, both have answers to questions and coords to Leg #6.
Leg #8 will be your final stop. You are looking for a 50 cal. Ammo box filled with the usual trade items as well as a railroad spike (found here), our sig item JD tractor, and a special FTF prize. You will also find some special instructions taped inside of the cover.
