Geocache Description:

Amersham, Buckinghamshire, is a lively little market town located close to Chesham & the Chalfonts just off the A413. This laid back place seems to come without a care in the world, but it was here in 1521 that half a dozen villagers were burnt to death in a shallow depression on the crest of the hill overlooking the town for all to see.

The story of the Amersham Martyr's began in 1414 when many people from Buckinghamshire travelled to St.Giles field in London, now Soho, to hear the preachings of John Wycliffe, the main critisiser of the established church. When Henry V heard of this he sent his men to disperse the followers and many of them were arrested or condemned to death. 3 of the men hailed from Amersham, and were dragged on hurdles through the streets & then hung on mass gallows. Over the following years people met in secret to read books and study their illegal religion. In 1506, the Bishop decided to hold an inquisition in Amersham and 3 more men met there fate. After these events things seemed to become quiet, but in 1521 the Bishop recieved the worst reports yet, and his chaplains once again scoured Amersham. The town was full of fear and suspicion and the outcome was the burning which took place at the top of Ruccles Field. The Location was carefully selected by the Bishop, as it would be visible from the entire town below. All residents were made to watch as the smoke rose & the flames engulfed those who had been brave enough to die for their beliefs. Friends & family members were some of those forced to help light and keep the fires burning. It was always said afterwards that nothing could grow on the land which saw the death of these men. Take a look for yourself at the soil which seems to give life to nothing more than the odd blade of grass...

Find a parking space somewhere amoungst the back streets near St.Mary's church which can't be missed from the high street. This is where you need to make your way to, as the perfect footpath runs through the church grounds, then out the back and up the Hill towards the monument which is where the coordinates will take you. Once there, complete these bits of information found on it, which will help to complete a final set of Coords:

1) The monument was erected in the year 1ABC

2) Thomas Harding was burned in Chesham in 1D3E

Now go to:- N51°40.E(C-1)(B-3) W000°36.(A-3)(D+1)(D-1)

These coords will take you to an entrace with a view to another? walk half way between the two and the cache can be found 10 paces from the path by a Fallen stump which was stoned to death. Have fun looking for this one, Good Luck! Dan...
