NVGs Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

Goldenhawk: I'm pulling this cache to relocate it and make it a bit easier.

First, I'm concerned about the existing spot being razed for expanding the nearby shopping center.

Second, it seems there are few people with access to night vision scopes - which surprises me in such a military-heavy, high-tech area that also loves hunting. Hmm.

The new version should be in place in a couple weeks, in a more friendly location, and with a visible-light beacon. The night cache format will remain, however.

Geocache Description:

TEN-HUT!

I need volunteers. Right now. For a dangerous in-country night op. On a mission that's vital to our war effort. If you're up for this one, step forward now.

Your mission, soldier, is to find the enemy's secret war plans. We know roughly where they've been hidden – the Jolly Green will get you to the insertion point nearby. But this one will be tough - you'll have to search after dark. Our last team says they couldn't spot the hideout, despite hunting the area with flashlights. We sent out a intel team; they have since learned that it's only marked by an infrared beacon. So your flashlight may get you to the area, but won't do you a bit of good finding the stash. You'll need a starlight scope or night vision goggles, soldier. Nothing else will work.

Unfortunately our intel wasn't very precise. The plans are hidden somewhere within about a hundred feet of the coordinates. We don't know how they're hidden – perhaps high, perhaps low, and the beacon may be above or below the cache – you'll have to carefully eyeball the area from your observation point at the coords. The intel team reports a small hummock at the coords, maybe a couple feet high and five wide - not big enough to hide behind, but it seemed like a good observation point. They left a red beacon there at the hummock - but don't count on it still being there. Your only hope is to get close without being noticed by the sentries, and use your NVGs to look for something that only shows up by infrared. You'll see it in the NVGs, but not with your naked eye. No lights. No reflectors. No air support. No target spotters. Just a tough mission.

And in case you think this is too easy, soldier, our intel says the red hummock beacon will only be visible for a couple hours after sunset. Maybe it recharges by day. But if you go too early after sunset or if the moon is too bright, the light may wash out your NVGs and make it impossible to spot the infrared beacon. So plan your insertion times carefully. Watch out for the LP – if the sentries see movement and fire up those floodlights, it'll blind your NVGs and you'll have to lay chilly and wait for them to kill the spots.

And in case you still think this is easy, the field team reported that while they may have spotted a possible hiding spot, they couldn't reach it directly from the observation point. The intervening area was littered with fallen trees. You'll probably have to do a wide flanking maneuver. But at least you'll be happy to hear there was no sign of poisonous plants and very few thorns, unlike your last mission. Oh, and take some goggles - it would be nasty to walk your eyeball into a branch in the dark.

Once you find the container, get back to the LZ as quietly and quickly as possible, pop smoke and wait for the slick to extract you. The general is waiting, son. Oh, and there's some loot in it for you – we also have word there's a pretty nice stash waiting for the first team there. Get on it. Grab your ghillie suit, flak vest, OD face paint, rifle and NVGs and get moving. We need those plans.
