Camas na Sgianadin
A place to relax and appreciate the views
Apart from the fact that Camas na Sgianadin forms part of a tricky little walk from Broadford (tricky, if you get out onto the slippery rocks at low tide, that is), this is a simple, refreshing place to relax. The Forestry Commission have built a new car park here, and from it you can wander past the cache site to the edge of the nearby forest, and the shoreline beyond.
What makes it special for me is that way back in 1968, when I first arrived on Skye, late in the day, I failed to find accommodation. So, four of us spent our first night on Skye, at Camas na Sgianadin, couped up in the car, making our first acquaintance with Skye midges. What a night that was!
Next morning, a heron flew low over the top of the car. Nothing noteworthy in that, you might think. But I'm a miner's son, from the backwoods of industrial Lancashire, and for whom the seaside was Rhyl or Blackpool. In that hazy morning light, that heron had me thinking we were in some lost world where pterodactyls still flew!!! The only thing I'd seen that was bigger was the trolley bus that ran from Rainhill into St. Helens.
Anyway, the cache is a short distance along the track from the car park. Once found, go beyond, cross a bridge, and follow the path for a while longer.
