The building was the creation of an Irish immigrant, one of the first lumbermen of the Peninsula, who later lost everything and was buried next to the establishment he had founded. The ruined building and its grounds were later purchased by Leland Stanford, and the site is now part of the Jasper Ridge Preserve of Stanford University.
The memorial itself was not here originally. It was displaced during the construction of the Stanford Linear Accelerator, and now stands about a mile from the original building. The successor to that original institution is also not here - you can read its history on the net.
