Geocache Description:

Rating is based on the terrain. Mount Lucia is the highest point in Stone State Park. The hills can be steep and the trails can be muddy after rains.

The cache was placed with permission of the Park Ranger and Iowa DNR.

Please replace the cache as you found it so it is still camouflaged.

There are trails to the cache from Stone Park, but the easiest access will be through the Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center:
Open Tues. - Saturday, 9a.m.-5p.m., Sunday, 1-5 p.m. Closed Mondays and Holidays

Trail maps are available at the Science Center. Give yourself some extra time enjoy the history of the loess hills and to explore this unique park located within the Sioux City limits.

Stone Park is recognized nationally as an "Urban Wildlife Sanctuary". Wild turkeys, white-tailed deer, coyotes, and red foxes can be found here. A variety of birds can be seen, including: turkey vultures, barred owls, rufous-sided towhees, and ovenbirds. Rare butterflies, such as the Pawnee skipper and Olympia white, are found on the prairie ridges.

Bur oak is the predominant tree species in the park. Late April and early May are the best times to view the woodland wildflowers. A wide array of prairie plants can be found on the steep, dry, slopes, including: yucca, penstemon, rough blazingstar, silky aster, and pasque flower.
