Geocache Description:

The second of the Movin' Dirt caches celebrating my life long intrest in heavy equipment.

Stockton was the birthplace of the Caterpiller tractor. The story of Caterpiller dates back to the early 1900's. Early in the last century Benjamin Holt was experimenting with a drive system for farm tractors that utilized continuous metal belted tracks instead of wheels. While watching one of the machines an observer made the comment how the tractor reminded him of a caterpiller and the name stuck. The tracks helped keep the heavy tractors from sinking in mud or dirt because the weight of the machine was spread over a larger area. During WWI Holts drive system was used to keep the first tracked armored tanks on the move. In 1925 The Holt Manufacturing Co. merged with the C.L. Best Tractor Co. to become the Caterpiller Tractor Co. and moved the operation to Peoria Illinois.
Caterpiller Inc. is now a multinational corporation.
According to their website, Caterpiller is the worlds largest manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, diesel and natural gas engines and industrial gas turbines.
And it all started here!!
