Concorde’s last home (Bristol) Multi-cache

This cache has been archived.

The Wombles: I was really pleased to see that during the week Concorde was finally moved under cover into what will become its own museum hanger. This will reduce its deterioration and you can read a news article about it here

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-bristol-38892693

When we watched Corcorde make its final landing here some 17 years ago, it was quite an emotional experience. I was probably like many others who grew up with stories and sights of Concorde and always intended to fly on it one day. Sadly the horrific accident in Paris precipitated its sudden withdrawl from service and it wasnt to be.

This cache was always intend to celebrate Concorde and it has now gone from sight. Also, building across the cache area has already resulted in one cache going missing and the replacement appears to have gone the same way. Therefore I'm archiving this one to make way for new caches.

Geocache Description:

This is a simple offset cache starting at The Mall shopping centre (for everyone who needs a break from shopping), a walk into a community forest area and view of the last Concorde to have flown, and then the physical cache. Dogs and children welcome, total round trip is about a mile and 30 minutes.

The Mall shopping centre is the largest shopping centre in the South West and near the junction between the M4 and M5 motorways. We seem to have spent lots of time here through the years and a caching diversion from the shopping would have been welcome. There is lots of free parking and a good selection of shops. The food in John Lewis or Marks and Spencers is probably best,. More details of the centre are here.

Filton airfield is home to the last Concorde to have flown, and we were fortunate enough to have been present when it landed which was an amazing sight. The airfield was an RAF station during the war and is now a commercial airfield and owned by BAe for their operations. Further details are here. The cache is in what used to be the community forest adjacent to the airfield.

Go to the coordinates to find the clues to the final location. This is inside the building which provides a reasonable signal for GPSrs with a Quad Helix antenna (MeriPlat, Sportrak, Garmin 76) but may prove impossible for GPSrs with a patch antenna. Hence the hint to part one is explicit. When logging this location we got a lock on 6 satellites with a Sportrak but the Garmin Emap didn’t get one.

Inside the Mall

The final cache is at N51°31.(A+A) (A+A+B) (A+B)', W02°36.138' where AB = the “mm of the holes” on the clipboard shown in the picture above.

As you approach the cache you can clearly see Concorde G-BOAF (number 216) which was the last Concorde built and the last to fly when it arrived here on 26th November 2003. It is now open to the public although bookings are some way in advance.

Parking is almost everywhere and free. There is a childrens' playground behind Boots and space for picnics at the final location.
