Off of an almost deserted road.
Heartbeat Road has always been a folktale of the area. In Montville there is a road called Peace Valley Road, also known as Heartbeat Lane. Legend has it that some years ago in the 1960s, two teens were parked at the boulder engaged in "lover's lane" activities. Without warning, a crazed woodsman jumped from behind the boulder wielding a large hatchet. The boyfriend jumped from the car and fled the scene in terror, leaving his date to the mercy of the madman. The youth ran all the way home, some five miles. The girl was never found.
Years after the attack, teen couples parked on Peace Valley would claim to hear the heartbeat of the long dead girl. Teens would park by the huge boulder, turn off their cars and roll down the windows to listen. In the distance, the sound of "thump, thump, thump" could be heard. Some teens even claimed to see shadowy figures creeping around the rear of the huge boulder, causing many teen-filled cars to speed down the road in a cloud of dust until they reach the safety of the other end.
On certain nights if you go down the road a shut your engine off, you can actually hear the heartbeat. It is very eerie at night. I don't know if the heart still beats today, but it was great back in the day. The cache is a 35mm film canister with just a log in it. Bring your own pen or pencil to log in.
