Šventuju giriu reikšme baltu tikejime didele - tai buve ju maldos namai, kur budavo aukojamos aukos, bendraujama su dievais ir jokiu budu nedrista ju kaip nors išniekinti bijant užsitraukti dievu rustybe. Ažuola gi senoveje žmones laikydavo šventuoju medžiu, stiprumo ir tvirtumo simboliu, kadangi buvo manoma, jog prie jo susirinkdave dievai: Lauku dievas, Mišku, Saules ir daugelis kitu. Kadangi Perkunas buvo Saules dievo kvieslys ir griausmingu balsu sušaukdavo visus dievus i pasitarima, ažuolo Perkunas niekados netrenkdavo, o pats medis laikytas šio dievo buveine.
Ažuolynai Lietuvoje sudaro 1,5 % visu mišku ploto. Jau 1420 m. buvo uždrausta kirsti senus ažuolus. Sodybas dažnai buvo stengiamasi apsodinti ažuolais. Lietuvoje daugiau kaip 100 ažuolu paskelbti gamtos paminklais. Ju aukštis siekia iki 30 m, skersmuo – iki 2,5 m.
Seniausias Lietuvoje augantis ažuolas – Stelmužes ažuolas (Zarasu rajonas). Didžiausias Lietuvoje ažuolu parkas yra Kauno Ažuolynas (Žaliakalnyje). Taip pat tai yra didžiausias miesto ažuolynas Europoje, o didžiausia ažuolu aleja – Smalininkuose. Dionizo Poškos „Baublys“ muziejus iruoštas ažuolo kamieno atpjovoje, kurios skersmuo 4,5 m, o amžius – 1000 metu.

The cach refers to the connection of the ancient lithuanians and the nature around them. After comming here, you feel the peace floating along with the water of Neris, the strength from the oaks around and the birds singing above your had make you smile J
The value of the sacred woods is loud in the religions of acient baltic races. Woods were held as temples for prayers, where people gave sacrificies and talked to their gods. An oak was supposed to be the very holy tree in the wood as all the gods gathered there. The oak tree was told to be the seat of the main god – the thunder. Therefore no lightning ever hits oaks.
Oak woods are 1,5 % of all the area of woods in Lithuania. Over a hundred of oaks are declared to be monuments of the nature. Their height is up to 30 meters, diameter is up to 2,5 meter.
The oldest oak in Lithuania is the oak of Stelmuže (Zarasai region). There is the biggest park of oaks in Kaunas (Žaliakalnis). Furthermore there is impressive alley of oaks in Smalininkai. Moreover, there is a museum, made inside of an oak, called „Baublys“ (made by Dionizas Poška). A diameter of that oak inside is 4,5 meter, and the age of the tree it self is one thousend years.
