Peaceful Park on Tom's Hill Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Minnesota Dave: Yes thanks for the photos of the cache's demise. I am in Bangalore now and not Madras, and though I occasionally visit Madras and will do so in a few weeks, I am going to archive this one. Water problems and muggle problems have existed in this hiding spot for a while so its best to let someone else try a new spot - I think higher up in the prayer garden could be better, or a little more off the main areas....... Thank you to all who have visited, logged and helped maintain this cache! Goodbye, Peaceful Park on Tom's hill cache!

Geocache Description:

The cache is under some rocks next to a brick wall inside a peaceful garden in the city of Chennai (Madras). It is a bit downhill from the highest point.

Welcome to Chennai, the city of seven million which has only this one geocache! Chennai is a "non event" tourist wise (an accurate assessment by Lonely Planet) but one of the most popular tourist spots in this city is this hill. A nice view at the top, as well as an interesting church and various signs and monuments.

The cache is in an enclosed public garden with an unlocked entrance. You can access this "garden" (the word garden is a slight overstatement of what the place really is) in two ways. One is you can go in the front entrance of this hill and climb the stairs, see the view and church, pay the guard for permission to take photos and then go down the backside. Or you can take a vehicle up the backside of the hill. There is a small entrance/parking fee for vehicles. If you are somewhat fit I recommend the stairs front entrance; more interesting.

The grass in the garden can be high so beware of potholes in the park (hence avoid going at night). The cache is located under some rocks located between 2 cement "cornerstones" in one corner of the park. When you are in the park facing the cornerstones, the cache is under some rocks next to where the wall meets the corner of the left side cornerstone (the cornerstone further from the sign). (I give all this description as my coordinates are only accurate to 45 feet or so).

As this is sometimes used by locals for picnics, there tends to be some trash strewn in the area. (a not so uncommon thing in India!) If you are in an environmental mood, bring a trash bag along and help make the area near the cache a little nicer!

You will have to move 6 or 7 medium to small sized rocks to get down to the cache. The rocks are needed to hide it better from muggles and to keep it off the damp bottom soil. The cache may still be wrapped in a white plastic bag for extra protection. Beware of curious muggles on the road and sometimes in the park. A guard is watching the parking lot just uphill near the garden also. The cache location is viewable from these various locations so look all around you 360 degrees before accessing the cache. There are fewer muggles in the middle of the day. This area is open from 6 am to 8 pm. Enjoy!
