Halleberg, looking over Vargön.
Halleberg rises to a height of 155 metres above sea level while Hunneberg's highest point is just a meter lower. Both of the plateaus lie at a height of 110 metres above the surface of Lake Vänern. The unusual shape of the hills has been caused because the diabase sheet that covered the plateaus protected them from weathering and erosion.
On Halleberg you can see the remains of Scandinavia's largest prehistoric fortress which dates from 400 AD. It was to the protection of this fortress that people fled with all their possessions in times of war.
Once at the top of Halleberg, take a rest and take in the view of the town of Vargön (Wolf Island). This viewpoint is a good place for a picnic, with a view that stretches to Vänersborg and beyond.
Parking can be found in the lay-by at: N58 21.434 E012 25.113 for at a push two cars. PLEASE DO NOT park at the gate entrance to the underground water reservoir, or the track leading to it.
