Park at the same location as for Colcord Pond View (N 43.51.423 W 70.57.938) (Where Colcord Pond Road makes a sharp bend to the right.) Head straight down the woods road, and take the first road to the right (east). This is a snowmachine route that will take you to a very old house where the trial turns right once again on its way up to the top of Devil’s Den. The hike in is about 2 miles with a gain of 625 feet in elevation (going up, then down, then really up).
The young people that own the old house are making a go of living in the middle of nowhere. They have a llama that guards the sheep and a solar panel for electricity. Cool!
The cache is about 60 feet off of the trail, to the north. The the view is 0.12 miles due south of the cache. (View coordinates: N 43.51.711 W 70.56.616) I didn’t want the cache too close just in case there are non-cachers up enjoying the view. The cache is an ammo box with an Asimov’s magazine, 3 butterflies from Guatemala, a Santa toy, a dragon toy, a bunch of magnets off of the fridge, 2 tiny toy army vehicles, two clips, and a votive candle. We usually make the hike a big loop by continuing beyond Devil’s Den and hooking up to other woods roads that eventually end up at the end of Colcord Pond Road. If you have a USGS map, you can go exploring and hopefully not get lost. And, there are other ways to get to Devil’s Den than the one I’ve described. Keep your eyes open for cellar holes. There are lots of them in these hills. It must have been quite the thriving community at one time.
