INDIANA SPIRIT QUEST #700

"Patriot Preacher"

Few of us these days really know what it means to be a true patriot. But buried in this cemetery is a man who joined with his brethren for a seven year struggle for independence from Britain in order to form a more perfect union.

John Robbins was born in North Carolina 1n 1741. He was a Baptist clergyman and served as a Private and a Chaplain for eighty-four months in the Continental Line during the Revolutionary War. He was wounded and captured on March 15, 1781 at the battle of Guilford Courthouse in North Carolina. This was Britain's last successful confrontation with the American patriots before they would surrender in October.

John Robbins was soon released. He ultimately came to Wayne County, Indiana. After a full life, he passed away on May 8, 1834 at 93 year's of age. His monument can be found here at the Locust Grove Methodist Episcopal Cemetery in Abington Township near the middle of the cemetery.
