Geocache Description:

SIR LANNIE AT SIXTY !!!

This series of caches has been placed to celebrate Sir Lannie reaching the milestone age of sixty. In those sixty years he has had numerous interests and pastimes. He has, or still is, a radio ham, a cyclist, an astronomer, a golfer, a magician, a caravanner, a fisherman, a DJ and finally a geocacher.

This cache relates to Sir Lannie as a “Radio Ham”. He wasn’t Sir Lannie in those days, not even just Lannie. Instead he was one of several local Radio Enthusiasts. I’ve heard many stories about those days, and in particular “Fox Hunts” where one radio ham (the fox) hid with his transmitter somewhere on the Wirral, and the others drove around with mobile units trying to locate the fox. There are certain resemblances to geocaching!

Here is an extract about one such Fox Hunt from his perspective (one of the hounds). The fox was actually hidden at the top of Old Gorsey Lane, adjoining the M53 approach and roundabout close to the Wallasey Tunnel entrance (in geocaching terms, that’s very close to GC3XHRC “Walk On the Wild Side: #6”)

After assembling at the start for 8:00pm, the initial bearing was taken and it pointed towards Birkenhead. So off we set, doing a steady 30 MPH (honest) towards Bidston Hill. Here we took a further reading and this pointed towards the Gorsey Lane area. After a short drive we arrived near the roundabout where the fox was hidden. We then asked for a transmission, he was about 57ish on the meter and pointed further up the road. After driving some 200 yds up the road he was 59+ back the way we had just come from. So back down the road again and we dived into the bushes in the middle of the roundabout. You guessed it NO FOX to be seen, his signal was now again down to 57. After repeating the trip up and down the road 3 times with the same results each time, we decided on another plan of attack. We drove up Old Gorsey Lane to the top, i.e. about 15ft away from his lair. Another call was made and he was 59 but not as strong as when we were further away, so off we set again for another look around not realising just how close we had just been. After driving around the dock road and just about every other street in Wallasey we eventually found him nearly one hour later just in time to be next to last to finish.

Ensure you note down the code on the logsheet as you will need it to find the final cache, “Sir Lannie – The Geocacher”
