Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
A geocache for rock climbers, sited on a classic mountain route.
Although it has a modest technical grade, it is neverthless a long
and committing route.
Please read the disclaimers – by going for this you are assuming
all risks. It should only be undertaken by people with appropriate
climbing equipment and the experience and skills to climb
competently at this grade.
Y Lliwedd is the largest cliff in England and Wales. Slanting
Buttress is at the Western end of the crag, which cuts an
intimidating north-facing figure over Llyn Llydaw far below. It is
a long route graded Diff of 9-10 pitches, according to which guide
book you’re using. You will be out for several hours completing the
229m route. It is spectacular and makes for a most enjoyable
mountain day out. Route finding can be tricky, so get a good guide
book. It would be a rather more serious expedition trying it in
poor weather conditions - best left for a fine day.
The approach is usually from Pen-y-Pass car park (£4) along the
Miners' Track to Llyn Llydaw, turn left up the hill, and cut across
the screes to the base of the route between two distinct wavy lines
of quartz (waypoint added below). A great walk which takes a little
over an hour.
The cache is hidden on the belay stance at the top of the
delightful pitch 6 or 7 (again depending on the guide book), at the
end of the exposed horizontal ridge (see pictures).
Make sure you secure yourself on the stance and bring up your
second before searching for the cache. There are some good flakes
on this belay.
It is a regular clip lock Tupperware box inside a camo bag. The
cache contains a log book, pencils etc, and a small first aid kit.
Please feel free to use it, but please leave it in the cache for
others. There is also room for adventurous TBs and GCs.
I doubt much stealth is required up here, but please rehide it
carefully, because we don't want climbers finding it by accident.
You top-out next to the Snowdon horseshoe path, just a couple of
hundred metres from the Y Lliwedd summit cache.
If you are planning to go for this cache, please email if you want
advice on the route, gear etc.
