Are you ready for
this?
Prepare yourself for a challenging hike to a steep, unnamed peak
that can be seen from many different areas within Horsethief
Canyon. From the top, you get amazing views all around.
Parking is available at the Horsethief Canyon trailhead.
Following either side of the Horsethief Canyon loop trail will
eventually lead to the Pine Creek pools and "
BBB's Hundred Hides in Horsethief." From that location, take
the trail east and follow it to N 32° 45.192 W 116° 38.095 where
you will turn off the trail to the south and begin the ascent. A
little cache, "
Can you see the way now?" will guide you.
Just inside the burn area, there is a faint path created by the
firefighters during the summer 2006 fire. Near the top, there is
some bushwhacking involved and from the top down to the cache
location, more negotiating over tumbled boulders through burned
vegetation. You will be going through all of this for an ammo can
that contains only a few small trade items.
At GZ, take a seat and enjoy the views.
This is a long, strenuous hike of more than six miles. In the
warmer months, be sure to take plenty of water and keep an eye out
for snakes.
