Startede som andelsmejeri i 1888, men blev privatejet i
1947 og har siden 1968 været ejet af familien Lindhardt. Anker
Lindhardt havde arbejdet, som mejeribestyre og gik imod tidens
trend og etablerede sig som selvstændig. I dag er det
sønnen Niels Henrik Lindhardt som driver mejeriet, han overtog
i 1998. Efter at havde været forvalter for Arla Foods mejeri i
Branderup.
Mejeriet har ikke egne mælkeleverandører, dette
stoppede man med i 2002. Da Nestlé stoppede sin produktion i
Hjørring af mælkebaseret fødevarer, Nestlé
aftog næsten alt mejeriets produktion af skummetmælk. De
sidste år modtog mejeriet ca. 4 millioner kilogram mælk
fra ni leverandører, det er dog stadig mælk fra nordjyske
køer, som bliver brugt til produktionen af is, mælken
bliver nemlig leveret fra Hirtshals Mejeri. Mejeriet er også
langt fra, at være under afvikling. Som det ellers er sket og
stadig sker med mange små mejerier. I Aabybro laver man nemlig
”verdens bedste is”.
Isproduktionen kom på banen efter, at Arla Foods
introducerede blandingsproduktet Kærgården. Dermed
skiftede forbrugerne nemlig vane og der blev en overproduktion af
fedt også på Aabybro Mejeri. På Island havde Niels
Henrik Lindhardt stiftet bekendtskab med iscreme og situationen
modnede hurtigt ideen om, at starte en produktion af iscreme hjemme
hos faderen. Så ferier og weekender blev brugt i Aabybro
på, at udvikle og starte produktion af iskager. Produktionen
tog hurtig fart og succesen var begyndt, derfor tog Niels Henrik
orlov fra mejeriet i Branderup for, at hellige sig isen.
Dengang i 1990 – var der endnu 1015 produktionssteder for
iscreme i Danmark, der i blandt de to store giganter Netlé og
Unilever. I dag er der så vidt vides 5 produktionssteder
tilbage, hvor af de 3 er dansk ejet: Polar Is, Vebbestrup og
Aabybro de to andre er: Norsk eget Diplom Is og Nestlé eget
Hjem Is i Esbjerg.
Hvor meget iscreme der bliver produceret i Aabybro er en
hemmelighed, dog er det ikke noget som de store is producenter
spærre øjnene op for. Det bliver det dog heller aldrig,
på Aabybro Mejeri bliver der ikke gået på kompromis
med kvalitet og pris. Det er en form for niche produktion, som
mejeriet har fundet her dog en niche, som flere og flere får
øje på. Udover at stå stærkt i Nordjylland
bliver isen også solgt flere og flere steder i resten af
Danmark. Mejeriets sortiment af iscreme bliver stadig bredere, og
det er blevet en dyd at være fleksibel og kunne efterkomme
specielle kundeønsker, bl.a. når det gælder
udformningen af bryllupsislagkager.
Et af de seneste skud på stammen er et samarbejde med en af
landets trendy kokke, Morten Heiberg, bl.a. med en fortid som
hofkok for Dronning Margrethe. Nu produceres der til Morten Heiberg
under dennes eget mærke Heiberg Is. Ad denne vej har iscremen
fra Aabybro bl.a fundet vej til Irmas butikker i Storkøbenhavn
foruden til Hotel D’Angleterre samt flyselskaberne Singapore
Airlines og SAS.
På mejeriet produceres også smør og rygeost,
smørret er saltet med sydesalt fra Læsø. Alle
produkter kan købes i mejeriets butik eller via internettet, i
butikken er man altid velkommen til, at smage inden man
køber.

en hel folkevandring især om fredagen.

under its own brand Heiberg Is. Ad this road has ithe ice cream
from Aabybro in particular found its way into Irmas shops in
Copenhagen in addition to the Hotel d'Angleterre and the airlines:
Singapore Airlines and SAS.
The dairy also produced butter and smoked cheese, the butter is
salted with seethe salt from island: Læsø. All products
can be purchased in the dairy store or via the Internet, in the
shop are always welcome to taste before you buy.
