The cache in on Deer Trap Mesa on the edge of Los Alamos, NM. The walk is about 1.5 miles roundtrip. Early on, drop to the left side of the mesa--the difficult terrain doesn't last long. The trailhead is at the end of Barranca Road at N 35 54.267, W 106 16.501.
The cache is a couple steps away from a superb view down a branch of Barrancas Canyon. The tub is beneath a well-weathered, fallen piñon pine. Watch for prickly pear cactus when hiking off the trail. Cliffs are in the area, so watch your children.
Inside is fossil, a Nancy Allen CD, Catch a Fish flip game, fun facts for kids cards, a small jigsaw puzzle and a mini-biner.
