Geocache Description:

A well visited location just off the Troodos road, with a few other little surprises.

When the Kouris dam was built in 1988 the entire village of Alassa was destined to disappear below the water. The government moved everyone into a nice new village that you will see up on the hill behind you. Even the church was submerged. But usually a part of it can be seen peeking eerily above the water. In fact in summer and years of severe drought the church is easily accessible, although each winter it deteriorates a little more. There are two ancient sites in the Alassa area and it is theorised that Alassa was in fact ancient Alashiya, a state in bronze age times.

You will see there is now a modern ‘dinky’ church above the old one. As you look around you will notice 13 cypress trees with name plates. These were planted as a memorial to the 13 people killed in the now legendary explosion at Evangelos Florakis Naval Base in 2011 which wiped out the island’s power station.

For those of you with little to no Greek (like me) the big stone plaque reads:

THE MEMORIAL TREES

The cache is a little smaller than a 35mm film pot with a hinged lid. Contains log and pencil only. And to respect the peace of the place I will tell you it is not within the church’s little fenced area. ****Congratulations pseacraft for FTF****
