Geocache Description:

Visitors with children will enjoy the playground area. If you happen to be around during operating hours, you could Czech out some local history inside the Fayette Heritage Museum and Archives. You are looking for a camouflaged micro. Bring your own pen/pencil. There will likely be muggles nearby.

Also, if you are standing at the cache site, you can look across Highway 77 and see the historic Faison Home.

Born in Tennessee, Nathaniel W. Faison (1817-1870), arrived in La Grange in 1829 to work as a land sureyor and a merchant. One of the first men from La Grange to volunteer to fight for Texas Independence against the Mexican army, Faison joined Capt. Nicholas Mosby Dawson in 1842, and the company of men left Fayette County to engage the enemy.

The Texans met a force of Mexicans under Gen. Adrian Woll, and most of the Texas soldiers were either killed or captured. Faison was one of those captured in what came to be known as the Dawson Massacre. (See nearby cache waypoint # GC1D27Y - Monumental Overlook - placed at Monument Hill State Historic Site in honor of these fallen heroes.)

Faison was held at Perote Prison in Mexico until March 23, 1844, when Gen. Waddy Thompson secured his release and that of the rest of the captured prisoners. Faison returned to La Grange and served as county clerk of Fayette County from 1846 to 1854. In 1848, Faison and fellow prisoner Capt. Edward T. Manton went with an expedition to bring back the bones of the Dawson men and others from the battle of Salado Creek to be interred at Monument Hill.

This house, along with much of its original furniture, was purchased by the La Grange Garden Club in 1961 and restored to its original condition.
