Geocache Description:

A 15 minutes car ride from downtown is necessary to find the final cache location.

The Bytown museum

Built in 1827 as a storehouse and a treasury during the construction of the Rideau Canal is the oldest stone structure of the city. It is reputed to be one of the most haunted buildings in Ottawa. Many ghosts have been reported haunting the building.

On the third floor, baby’s cries have been heard coming from the dolls exhibit.

The ghost of Duncan McNab is frequently sighted on the three floors of the museum. McNab, a commissary officer during the Canal’s construction, had a reputation of a trickster. In his afterlife, he still plays tricks to the employees and visitors of the museum. People claimed earring footsteps following them on the stairs leading to the first floor. When they stopped, the footsteps continued and stopped just behind them. No one else was there. Items in locked displays are moved overnight, televisions are turned on or off without human intervention.

Some claim that the ghost of the Colonel By is there too. Arguments between Colonel By and McNab have been heard. Employees avoid moving too much the Colonel’s belonging in an exhibit after an angry voice yelled at one of them “Get out! Get out! Get out!” while they were working on it.

The most violent sightings are coming from the vault at the end of the first floor. There have been reports of people being push, grabbed or tripped in the tight confined space.
