Geocache Description:

A camoed flat rubbermaid on a promitory off the trail to the microwave tower

There is a bench near the small trail to GZ where you can rest from the climb up and prepare for the tougher climb to come. Or, if you come from above you can rest your aching knees between pounding descents. There are also Switchbacks for a more liesurely ascect/descent. Downhill -- I'd take the switchbacks unless you are suicidal.

The cache is out on a promitory about 100 feet away. There is a great view of Lake San Marcos. Looking at the dam has convinced me that I need flood insurance since I sit about 12 feet above San Marcos Creek before it hits Batiquitos Lagoon.

So, yesterday I went out to find a couple of Carlsbad caches I had missed in the past. In the process I found this nice flat trail at La Costa Glen with fences, trimmed brush and raked DG. I left a few caches in the open spaces for Cachers on a leisurely walk or ride. It was all spontaneous. I just happened to have the various micros and smalls that work on that trail.

Today! I’m going back to a trail system I really like. It’s long. It has vertical. But it is also groomed and maintained. When I walked it a couple of days ago the machetes were out cutting back the brush. A little disconcerting. I’m not sure I like walking around machete wielding folks when I’m out by myself in the early morning. Sort of like talking to people with guns – only more horror movie-esque. (It was also a reminder to set hanging bush caches well back from the trail.)

I packed the caches I thought would work on these trails. I also took lots of water, good shoes, and appropriate TOTT.

I came to these trails because I wanted to find a passage from San Elijo Hills to Double Peak – I felt like Lewis and Clark. Google Maps wasn’t completely clear, but it looked like it could be done. It can -- all on excellent trails. I didn’t pick up a single foxtail in 10 miles of walking (?). (It’s like walking because a third of it is blacktop. It’s a hike because there is like 2,500 feet of gross vertical.) The path I followed to set these caches was about a 4.5 mile round trip.

These are great trails. It starts with the San Elijo Hills Canyon Trail and connects to the Double Peak and Lake View Trails. You can pick it up in San Elijo Hills Park, several trailheads in SEH (like the end of Elfin Forest Road.) Or, you can start at the new park at the top of Double Peak Road and walk down to SEH Park. (Use two cars if you don’t want to do that “gross” vertical.)

A few of these caches can be easily reached from trailheads, but the series requires a hike. MTBers with low gears will find it easy – they could almost use their road bikes.

Have fun!
