KONGLOMERAT:
ist ein verfestigter Schotter und bedeutet lat. "zusammengerollt". Gerundete Gesteinstrümmer sind mit einem tonigen, kalkigen und kiesligen Bindemittel verkittet. Das Verhältnis zwischen grobem und feinem Material ist schwankend. Wenn die Bezeichnung Konglomerat gelten soll, müssen Grobanteile von > 50% enthalten sein. Nur vereinzelt gibt es Rollstücke bis Kopfgröße. Konglomerate sind schlecht korngrößenklassiert, weisen gewöhnlich keine Schichtung auf und längliche Gerölle sind nur gelegentlich eingeregelt. Die Zusammensetzung ist abhängig vom Ursprungsort. Bei einheitlichen Gesteinssorten der Ausgangsregion ist auch das Endprodukt entsprechend homogen. Im allgemeinen sind aber mehrere Gesteinsarten vertreten und dadurch hat das Konglomerat meist ein buntfleckiges Aussehen. Dabei herrschen graue, bläuliche und gelbliche Farbtöne vor, bei einem stark eisenhaltigem Bindemittel auch rötlich.
Nach einem weitem Transportweg ist der Geröllbestand einheitlicher. Durch Zerstörung der weicheren Schotter-Komponenten ergibt sich eine Auslese zugunsten der widerstandsfähigeren Gesteine, wie Quarzit, Amphibolit, Diabas, Granit und Kieselkalk.

GESCHICHTE:
In der Stadt Salzburg gibt es seit dem 17. Jahrhundert einen Männerberuf, der wohl einmalig ist - nämlich den Beruf des "Bergputzers". Dieser Berufszweig geht auf eine schwere Felssturzkatastrophe in der Nacht des 16. Juli 1669 zurück, als sich in der sogenannten "Gstättengasse" - einem alten Stadtviertel Salzburgs - an der Felswand des Mönchsbergs, gigantische Felsmassen (Felsstücke von mehr als 100 Tonnen) von der Mönchsbergwand lösten und zwei Kirchen sowie 13 Bürgerhäuser zertrümmerte. Insgesamt kamen bei diesem schrecklichen Unglück 220 Menschen ums Leben.

Als Ursache des Unglücks wurde später festgestellt, daß zu viele Keller, Gewölbe und Kammern in den Fels führten und der Berg dadurch so ausgehöhlt worden war, daß die darüber hängenden Felsmassen nachgaben. Poröses Gestein, Eis, Wasser, Hitze und Kälte taten das Ihre.

Seit diesem 16. Juli 1669 gibt es den Beruf des Bergputzers. Nach der Schneeschmelze werden auch heute noch Männer an Seilen bis zu 140 m tief vom Mönchsberg, aber auch vom Kapuzinerberg und vom Festungsberg, heruntergelassen. Sie klopfen die Felswände mit Hämmern ab und lösen so lockeres Gestein, um eine neue Katastrophe zu verhindern. Die ersten Bergputzer, als kühne Helden angesehen, hießen Hauser, Brandauer und Jager. Die Namen sind bis zum heutigen Tag erhalten geblieben, weil es Sitte wurde, auch alle nachfolgenden Bergputzer so zu rufen.

Conglomerate A conglomerate is a rock consisting of individual stones that have become cemented together. Conglomerates are sedimentary rocks consisting of rounded fragments and are thus differentiated from breccias, which consist of angular clasts. Both conglomerates and breccias are characterized by clasts larger than sand (>2 mm).
Paraconglomerates consist of a matrix-supported rock that contains at least 15% sand-sized or smaller grains (<2 mm), the rest being larger grains of varying sizes.
Orthoconglomerates are defined by texture. They are a grain-supported rock that consists primarily of gravel-sized grains (~256 mm), with less than 15% matrix of sand and finer particles.
In rock types such as paraconglomerates and orthoconglomerates, were the matrix to be removed, the rock would collapse. This is because the larger grains are supported by the matrix and, without it, there is nothing to hold the grains together. Therefore, the higher the percentage of matrix, the more unstable the boulder.

HISTORY of the "BERGPUTZER" "MountainCleaners":
In the city of Salzburg there is since the 17th century a male profession which is quite unique - namely the occupation of the "Bergputzers". This branch of profession decreases to a heavy rock fall disaster at night of the 16th of July, 1669 when in the so-called "Gstättengasse" - to an old town quarter of Salzburg - in the cliff face of the monk's mountain, huge rock masses (rock pieces of more than 2000 hundredweight) freed themselves of the monk's mountain wall and two churches as well as 13 town houses smashed. All together 220 people died in this awful misfortune.

As a cause of the misfortune it was found out later that too many cellars, vaults and chambers led in the rock and the mountain had so been hollowed out by the fact that the rock masses hanging about that gave way. Porous rock, ice, water, heat and cold acted theirs.

Since this 16th of July, 1669 there is the occupation of the Bergputzers. After the thaw men are also let down even today in ropes up to 140 m deep by the monk's mountain, but also by the Capuchin's mountain and by the fortress mountain. They knock off the cliff faces with hammering and solve so loose rock to prevent a new disaster. The first Bergputzer, respected as daring heroes, were called Hauser, Brandauer and Jager. The names have been preserved down to the present day because it became a custom to call also all following Bergputzer so.
