Geocache Description:

A "Gold Star Veteran" is any service member that has died in the line of duty. This monument honors all the Gold Star Veterans of Berlin. Currently 114 names are etched in the granite monument honoring these brave souls that made the ultimate sacrifice.

Background
Admiral Carey grew up in Berlin, WI where his first 13 years were spent on a farm about two miles East of town where the family had a beef and dairy cattle farm along almost a half mile of the river. He entered military service in the U. S. Navy during the Vietnam War and served aboard the U. S. S. TOPEKA [CLG-8] in the South China Sea during that war. He became a member of a very long line of military veterans “From Berlin, WI” that included not only his Dad in World War I, both of his brothers post-World War II, two Great Uncles and his Great Grandfather in the Civil War.

In recent years, several patriotic citizens in Berlin formed the Berlin Veterans Foundation, Inc. and raised money to build a Veterans Memorial in Riverside Park (along the Fox River). It turns out that the young men and women from Berlin, WI and the surrounding area are in fact, incredibly patriotic and a much higher percentage than normal enter the military service in both peacetime and war.

The Admiral Carey Foundation has created an endowment dedicated to the upkeep and maintenance of the veterans memorials in Berlin, WI, and the balance of the funds are to be dedicated to the study, research, writing and recording of the histories and service of all of Berlin’s veterans, past, present and future. This endowments has allowd Admiral Carey's legacy to live on in his small hometown.
