U-110 Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

Boneychest & Catsuey: Well, the war is well and truly over and so it's time for the crew of U-110 to return home. With this in mind we set off to find her this afternoon, fully expecting this elusive u-boat to be submerged but we were pleasantly surprised to find her in dry dock again. The old hulk and her valuable contents have now been recovered and gracefully retired.

Congratulations and thank you to all who discovered the secrets of our Enigma series.

Geocache Description:

Enigma. Noun, from the Latin word aenigma, meaning puzzle. Used for something that has an unknown meaning or purpose.

This is the final part in our series of 'Enigma missions'. Each of the first five caches contains either coded information or tools that are needed to locate this cache. You need to have completed all of the first five missions before you can crack this, the final part.

KptLt Kemp On 9th May 1941, the Royal Naval ship HMS Bulldog forced the German submarine, U110, to surrender south of Greenland at 60N, 33W. The U-boat’s captain, Lieutenant-Commander Fritz Julius Lemp tried to destroy U110 but a naval party was able to board the submarine and seize the Enigma cipher machine and codebooks.

Many historians’ view this as the most important capture of the entire war and it was so secret that even the crew of U-110 did not know of it!

U-110 had been attacking a convoy along with U-201 when Lemp left his periscope up too long (probably to confirm a kill). The escort HMS Aubretia spotted it and rushed to the scene dropping depth charges. U-110 survived the first attacks but HMS Bulldog and HMS Broadway soon joined the hunt. The U-boat was forced to surface and HMS Bulldog immediately went onto ramming course. Lemp believed that his submarine would be sunk and ordered "Abandon Ship" but Bulldog’s commander realized at the very last moment that a capture might come off and tried to avoid hitting U-110 (which he almost did).

Lemp figured that since the boat was going to be rammed and presumably sunk, its secrets were safe within. Only when he was in the water did he realize that the boat was not sinking and attempted to swim back and prevent capture. That was the last seen of him - some say that a British sailor shot him in the water to prevent him from scuttling the submarine but this has never been confirmed.

If you have stumbled on this cache listing by accident then what follows will mean nothing to you!

If you have completed the first five 'missions', then you should have a key to the machine settings and, Hopefully, you will have access to the correct machine as well.

This is the last piece of information that you need to set the machine correctly:
    A* = Number of rotors
    B* = Reflector
    C* = Thin rotor
    D* = Wheel order
    E* = Ring settings
    F* = Stecker pairs
    G* = Indicator settings

These are the initial settings. If you make a mistake, then you must reset the machine and start again.

No travel bugs in this cache please.

Why?
1.  Because the listed coordinates are several hundred miles away from the actual location of the cache
2.  Because the difficulty level means that the cache will have a low visitor frequency.

Cache contents
The theme of the enigma missions has been puzzles and so the contents of the cache are mostly puzzles. Please try to maintain this theme with your swaps. Thanks, and good luck.
