Geocache Description:

You could be forgiven for wiping a feverish brow upon checking the location of this cache - Wellington's old Fever Hospital.

By day, the Fever Hospital stands silent and empty, but by night, it's all a bustle as the spectoral Sister Slippers - as she's known by her staff and TB-ridden patients - resumes control of the ghost-filled wards.

Her nickname supposedly reflects the shuffling sound made by the head nurse as she completes her rounds every hour on the dot; her choice of footwear emitting a warning for those not asleep to duck under the covers as she waves her torch across each bed - or for slacking staff to at least appear busy.

While it's a routine that will haunt all of them for eternity, this medical facility's lifespan was considerably shorter. It opened in 1920 and operated until the early 1980s, firstly as an isolation ward for patients with infectious diseases, including tuberculosis, then as a chest hospital.

Since closing in 1981, it has largely been vacant, except for a brief period as Wellington Polytech's temporary School of Music later that decade. In time it may become the Wellington SPCA's new premises if the necessary $9 million can be raised.

For now the building is empty, or so they say. Sister Slippers is apparently just a figment of the city's communal imagination - unless you're among those who've witnessed the good nurse frowning from one of the building's windows just on dusk.

You, however, will be perfectly safe. As the hospital grounds are off-limits without the permission of Wellington City Council's Parks Department, the cache has been hidden nearby on public land. The most you will have to be concerned about is mud in bad weather and the ghosts of mountain-bikers fast.

There are two routes to ground zero, one considerably steeper than the other using the local mountain-bike track; the terrain level listed reflects the easier (and safer) option.

You will also need surgical gloves to remove the container from its hide.
