History Park Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

rogueblack: This one is gone and the historical society says they don't know what happened to it... which means it's really gone. It's a shame but fun while it lasted. This spot is now open in case anyone has a more clever idea than a tree micro for this park.

Geocache Description:

History Park is aptly named. Find this micro and take a stroll back in time.

History Park

Col. Isaac Trabue

Ever since Col. Isaac Trabue purchased 30 acres of land in our area, named it after himself, then spent the rest of his life bitter because it was incorporated without him and not named after him, Punta Gorda has had a bustling history that's survived economic depressions, disasterous hurricanes and monsterous fires. Col. Trabue's wife, fellow pioneer Virginia Trabue, is buried without her husband in nearby Indian Spring Cemetery.

Trabue Office
(Waymark: WM1WNY)

Amazingly, The Trabue Law and Land Sales Office, along with several other historical treasures, have survived all natural and man-made disasters. The Trabue Law and Land Sales Office now calls History Park its home. The Trabue Law and Land Sales Office is currently in use by the Peace River Center for Writers.

Cigar Cottage

El Palmetto Cigar Company provided quaint cottages for their employees during the company's success during the 1890's. After the company went out of business, the cottages were purchased and moved. Current owner Mike Nickelson was kind enough to donate one of the cottages and it now resides in History Park.

Calaboose (Old Jail)

The Calaboose is an Old Jail that was once located on the Charlotte County Courthouse grounds to hold arrested individuals until they could be transported to the DeSoto County Jail. Originally, it had three concrete walls. Local historians reassure that very few people ever spent time in this small space.

Hotel Charlotte Harbor Fountain

This fountain was the centerpiece in the middle of the landscaped lawn of the beautiful Hotel Charlotte Harbor. The landmark building graced Punta Gorda's waterfront at the site of the Punta Gorda Mall from 1886-1959.

If you'd like to see inside these wonderful buildings, The Peace River Center for Writers[link] offers tours during business hours by appointment only.

Oh, and while you're there, you can find a cache, too!
