Geocache Description:

A short 1.6 mile RT hike (about 300 ft elevation gain) to a lesser-visited Gorge waterfall: spectacular Elowah Falls. Terrain is a gravel/dirt path, narrow in spots, and can be muddy and slick nearer the falls. This falls has more spray than any we've visited--a refreshing place to pause on a sunny day.

UPDATE 4/8/06: We moved the cache approximately 20 feet from original locatation. Coordinates remain unchanged, but should still be within EPE. All instructions and photos below have been changed to reflect the current cache location.

This cache is in a canyon, and is placed among very large boulders, so satellite reception is quite poor. For this reason, we are giving explicit directions which when followed, will yield a successful hunt.

Trailhead parking is at John B. Yeon State Park (access from exit 35 coming from Portland, exit 37 from the east). Follow trail signs to Elowah Falls, bearing left at two junctions. At the falls:
1) Cross over the bridge to the east side of the river, then veer left (north) onto a vague rocky trail that goes between two very large boulders.
2) Follow this trail under two low fallen trees. Immediately after doing so, there is another large boulder directly in front of you.
3) The cache (ammo can) is in a hollow covered by rocks about 1/2 way up the right hand side of above-said boulder. Cache can be reached from above or below.

For additional guidance, take a look at the photos below, which illustrate our directions. We don't want anyone to go away empty!

You might be tempted but please don't go straight up from the cache. It is very steep could potentially cause erosion right at an area which supports the trail above.

If you'd like to hike a bit longer and see another beautiful waterfall, combine this cache hike with our Overcoming Acrophobia: Upper McCord (GCMAAX) cache for a 3-mile RT with 750 foot total elevation gain.
