Cache Description: Fort Mountain State Park is a beautiful area of history located in Murray County in North Georgia just east of Dalton and west of Ellijay. It offers a variety of activities for adventuresome folks including camping, swimming, mountain-biking and hiking. The cache is a short distance off the lake trail. Please remember to "leave no trace."
To find the cache you will need to park near the beach area, a very busy place on summer weekends! In the additional waypoints section that’s marked "Beach Front" you’ll find a good starting point. There are several other access points to choose from but we will recommend this one!
The lake trail starts to your left as you are facing the lake (to the east) the trail is very easy as you walk around the point of the lake. Be sure to enjoy the interpretive signs along the way! There are three red blazed trails off of the lake trail as you proceed in this direction. You will be looking for the (additional waypoint), "trail split".
From here you will ascend 100 ft. in the last tenth of a mile! This is the reason for the 2 star terrain rating. You will find the cache among some fallen trees.
Please re-hide the cache like or better than you found it. Please remember to "Leave no Trace" as you approach and CITO ("Cache in, Trash out) as you leave! There are two other caches near the Historic Fort area near the top of the mountain and one of the oldest and least found virtuals here in the park.
