British American Transatlantic Geocache - American Multi-cache

This cache has been archived.

MadMin: I attempted to contact the owner of British American Transatlantic Geocache - American to find out about the status of this cache on 10/13/2009. I have received no response from the owner on the cache page or via email. I also asked the caching community to help this one out, but got no response from anyone regarding the maintenance of this cache. Because of that I'm afraid I have to archive this cache.

I will be more than happy to review this cache again and (hopefully) reinstate it once you have corrected any issues with the cache. please contact me via ma.reviewer@gmail.com to do so.

Please note that unarchiving a cache page places it through the same review process as a newly proposed cache, using the cache placement guidelines currently in effect.

Geocache Description:

(See also British American Transatlantic Geocache - British Page in England.)

Welcome to the first (that we know of) International Geocache site! Actually, it's a pair of sites, one in the U.S., one in the U.K. We've set this up in the spirit of international cooperation and in recognition of the long-standing friendship and ties between our two countries. "We" are actually a group of two of us in the U.S. and five in the U.K. who found each other through geocaching.com and thought this might be rather fun!

This is a two-step geocache. To find the second cache (the final prize!), you will need a geocaching partner on the other side of the Atlantic. We'll help you find a partner through this cache page and the corresponding British page.

The way the process works is as follows:

The first part of the process is to find the first cache, located at the coordinates at the top of the page. There is nothing in this first cache except two coordinates: the latitude of the second cache in England and the latitude of the second cache in New England. (As a result, the container may be rather small). Your partner in England will find, in their first cache, the longitudes of both the second cache in England and the second cache in New England. So….you won't be able to find the second cache in the U.S. and your partner won't be able to find the second cache in the U.K. until 1) both of you find the first caches and 2) you get in touch with each other via email and exchange the necessary coordinate information. Sound easy enough?

Some relevant information:

1) The driving distance between first and second caches in the U.S. is about 15 minutes.
2) The first cache in the U.K. is located in a town with the same name as the first cache in the U.S. Likewise, the locations of the second caches in both countries share the same name. So be sure to exchange place names (or suspected names) with your tranatlantic geocaching partner!

How to find a partner across the bonnie seas:

1) Log yourself in. Then check the notes below. If a Brit, searching for a partner, has posted a note on this page, contact them via the geocaching.com email system by clicking on the individual's name just above their note, which will bring you to the User's Profile page. Click on "Email this user" and follow the instructions. Post a note yourself indicating you are tentatively pairing up with the person in Britain posting the note, in case it takes a few days to establish contact. (If you are not familiar with how to post a note, log your visit as if you had found the cache. However, under "What type of log?", click "Other" instead of "Found it". Geocaching.com will not count it as another cache found.) Be sure to indicate what country you live in - it will get very confusing otherwise!

2) If no British geocacher has posted a note below, go to the British American Transatlantic Geocache - British Page, log in, and post a note indicating you are searching for a British partner to do this cache. Be sure to indicate what country you live in - it will get very confusing otherwise! You will have to wait until someone from the U.K. contacts you. (Again, if you are not familiar with how to post a note, log your visit on the British page, as if you had found the cache. However, under "What type of log?", click "Other" instead of "Found it", so that it will not be counted as another cache found.)

3) If you initiated the partnering note in 2) above and have formed a geocaching partnership, you should immediately remove your note from the British page, or else others may try to contact you to find a partner.

4) At times, there may be more Americans waiting for partners in England than vice versa. If you have been waiting for a while without a British partner contacting you, you can email the "Lunchbox" group in England (see the British American Transatlantic Geocache -British page). The "Lunchbox" group are the cache hiders in the U.K., and they would be glad to email you with the longitude of the second U.S. cache at your request.

If you'd like to see some examples of how this whole system should work, please refer to the following web page:

Be sure to take a picture of yourself with the camera at the second cache, and take some time to explore the fascinating area around the cache. Once you have found the second cache, be sure to log your find on this page and notify your transatlantic partner of the find. You may want to post a note on the British page as well. Have fun!
