Geocache Description:

Difficult drive or fun hike to a mysterious object

When we read the description to the "Rocky Mtn High" cache, we figured we were coming to this place, but we were wrong(Rocky Mtn High is over a mile away). Honestly, we don't know why nobody has ever hidden one here yet, this is the most baffling and interesting place in these parts, plus the view is spectacular. You'll know where this is hidden as soon as you get within a couple of miles, it's the obvious place. Now the tough part, getting there. If you have a capable 4x4, or an ATV, then you should be able to drive right to it. Otherwise drive to where it starts getting rough, and you have about a half mile to walk. If you decide to drive, the road from the North West is not as bad as the road from the South West (my kids call that one the "Crazy Road"). We did make it up the Crazy Road in a stock Bronco II so it's not that awful bad. As with any 4x4 road, use caution, and walk if you have doubts. The cache is a disposable camera box wrapped with electrical tape, and contains two washers, a penny, two nails, a log, and a pencil (yes we improvised). If anybody knows the history of this site, let us know, we've been wondering for years why this is here, or how the heck somebody built it in such a remote location.Update(3/28/04): We came back this weekend and replaced the improvised camera box with a coffee can. We included some assorted trinkets, a better log, and a pen. We also scouted the area for poppies. Not too many out this year, but there's a pretty nice showing on about 10 acres, directly to the west of these buttes. The Burger Boys, Karin, and Zoe.

Update, 12/11/04: Came up to do some cache maintenance and to hide a Jeep TB. Nice to have the jeep TB where it belongs, namely at the top of a 4x4 trail! Weather is spectacular, and the views are awesome. Replaced the coffee can with a new one. Saw some new fences and signs blocking a few of the ways in, but there is still quite a lot of ways to get up there that aren't fenced/posted. I did a property search, and some of the surrounding area belongs to the Santa Monica Mtns. Conservancy!?! So be sure to respect the fenced areas, and stay on the established 4x4 trails. Hopefully we won't get shut out of this one.

Update 4/5/05: Sorry all it looks like this cache has been removed. Quite a few people come up here (dirt bikes, atv, 4x4 etc.) so it's really not too surprising. It's still worth the drive/hike to see the site, plus the poppies and yellow flowers are spectacular. My Bronco is not feeling to well right now, so I might not get up to the site for a few weeks to replace it. Until then, it sounds like there are some geostickers (thanks Zenofile and Chooper!) To get credit for the find, just describe the drive/hike up, and consider it found. If somebody that gets up there before me wants to leave a logbook and some stuff, I'd appreciate that too (you'll get full credit for this "co-cache")

Update 2/13/06 The logs and caches keep disappearing, likely due to the heavy traffic from the dirt bikers, etc. Ther roads up also appear to be getting tougher, so exercise caution, or walk. Team Hatco was nice enough to replace the cache in a more secure location (thanks Team Hatco!) See their log for more info (may be a spoiler). Hopefully their hide will last a bit longer. If it doesn't it's still worth the trip to enjoy this odd object and the great view.
