Geocache Description:

The Edgemar station of the short-lived Ocean Shore Railroad still stands; this cache will take you there.

From 1907-1920, the Ocean Shore ran from San Francisco down the San Mateo County coast. Intended to connect to Santa Cruz, it never made it, ending at Tunitas Creek.

Like many railroads of the time, the Ocean Shore was in part a real estate speculation. Its slogan "Reaches the Beaches" suggested just what kind of promotion was involved: weekend excursions and vacation properties. As the road was built south from SF, stations were opened at the sites of new towns and lots platted for sale.

On October 4, 1907, the San Francisco Chronicle carried an ad proclaiming:

"Take this ride and see for yourself - you will enjoy the day.... see the wonders of this new road, and appreciate the beauties of EDGEMAR as a place for a home and the possibilities there of profitable investment. Come prepared to be convinced, for EDGEMAR will win you."
In fact, Edgemar was one of the more successful colonies, and the size of the station showed it: it now accommodates several businesses. The Ocean Shore itself did not do so well. It passed into final bankrupcy in 1920, derailed by the coming of the automobile.

The demise of the railroad led to litigation over its former right of way. In the 1930s, a court order allowed the California Division of Highways to construct the Cabrillo Highway on the Ocean Shore right of way between San Francisco and Edgemar. Edgemar is now part of Pacifica, and the Cabrillo Highway has been rebuilt in a limited access trench, but the old station is still a going concern.

(Due to repeated muggling, the hide has been relocated a short distance from the old station. See the additional waypoint for the station coords. You do not need to cross any fences to retrieve the cache. It is now a magnetic 35mm film can. Please rehide carefully so it does not become inaccessible.)
