HISTORY

February 29, known as a leap day in the Gregorian calendar, is a date that occurs in most years that are evenly divisible by 4, such as 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2016. Years that are evenly divisible by 100 do not contain a leap day, with the exception of years that are evenly divisible by 400, which do contain a leap day; thus 1900 did not contain a leap day while 2000 did. Years containing a leap day are called leap years. February 29 is the 60th day of the Gregorian calendar in such a year, with 306 days remaining until the end of that year. The Gregorian calendar repeats itself every 400 years, which is exactly 20,871 weeks including 97 leap days. Over this period, February 29 falls 13 times on a Sunday, Tuesday, or Thursday; 14 times on a Friday or Saturday; and 15 times on a Monday or Wednesday.

The leap day was introduced as part of the Julian reform. The day following the Terminalia (February 23) was doubled, forming the "bis sextum"—literally 'double sixth', since February 24 was 'the sixth day before the Kalends of March' using Roman inclusive counting (March 1 was the 'first day'). Although exceptions exist, the first day of the bis sextum (February 24) was usually regarded as the intercalated or "bissextile" day since the third century. February 29 came to be regarded as the leap day when the Roman system of numbering days was replaced by sequential numbering in the late Middle Ages.

GEOCACHING

For Geocachers, February 29 has only existed three times prior to this day (2004, 2008, 2012), much to the chagrin of cachers who may have started, say, in late 2012 or 2013, who wish to fill out their calendars. Even if you do not wish to fill out your calendar, you will never know if you wish to in the future, so make sure you get a find or attend log today! Also, more than likely Groundspeak will be creating a souvenir to help entice you further! To celebrate this rare occasion, let's grab some food and share caching stories at Golden Corral!  We will convene in the event room of the restaurant at 6:30PM.

!!!GUIDELINES!!!

- The party room only supports about 60 people comfortably, so please keep in mind that you may have to sit outside the party room.  As is such I do ask that if you are planning on attending other events throughout the day, please consider leaving this event for people who have to work and for whom this may be their only event of the day.  Note this is only a request, not a requirement..

- Also due to the lack of space, please try to keep the numbers in your party to a minimum.  I would like to try to not be spread out throughout the entire restaurant.  Please submit an accurate head count in your Will Attend log so I can keep a tally.  Also if your numbers change either edit your log and contact me that the number has changed or post a note (either way will let me know your number changed.)

- Since this is a buffet, every person will be required to pay to enter.  I do apologize in advance if this is a burden for you/your family.

- Don't be surprised if a certain cache makes its way to the event... especially if you haven't signed it yet!

- Arrive early for the best selection of seats!
