Geocache Description:

The cache containers and cache clues are in or near public parks of the area -- known locally as "bowl parks." The cache locations are not far from many of Birmingham's hidden treasures -- favorite eateries, sculptures, parks, clubs, bars, and more.

This area is one of my family's favorite places to stroll for fun, or get some exercise. This area is one of the only areas in Birmingham we have found that has a "big city, neighborhood feel" to it, since there is always someone walking their dog, jogging, playing games in the park. Other areas of suburbia, people are hidden away in their houses behind huge fences. This is a place to come and enjoy diversity, and I'm going to try and make you get some exercise while you're at it. These are easy walks, with very little elevation change and sidewalks all the way -- it's a lot more fun if you walk instead of drive, and parking is not a guarantee in this area. Pick a pretty day and have fun!

You will be VERY visible in these locations. Every sidewalk, parking spot, and bench nearby is in clear view of the cache containers since each park is lower than the street. You're going to have to be as stealthy as you've ever been to avoid being seen finding and replacing the containers! You will need to bring your own pen. Baby-stroller and dog friendly. In fact, one of the parks you will visit is known as the "dog park," so plan on letting Rover romp a bit. Bonus "brownie points" for posting pictures of you and your family caching -- including the dog!

It's NOT as hard as it looks. Enjoy the hunt!

**NOTE** -- minor corrections made to 2-B and 7-A on Feb 25 2004!

Your Mission:

  1. Your starting point is at the above coordinates. Write down the coordinates you find here, and go to the next step.

  2. Step 2-A At this spot, face the semi-famous building next to you. How many large stars do you see, and how many points does one star have? Add the numer of stars plus the number of points of two stars. Subtract that number from the "N33 xx.xxx" coordinates you found in step 1. This is your new N coordinate.

Step 2-B Take the total number of points from ALL the stars. Multply that total by two. Add 7 to this, and divide by 11. Subtract this number from the original "W086 yy.yyy" coordinates you found in step 1. This is your new W coordinate.

  3. Step 3 WALK all the way to the new coordinates. Driving is not advisable, you may not find parking.

  4. Step 4-A Hope you're not too tired at this point, you've got a long way to go. How many ROUND windows can you see on the side of the building nearest you? (Note: if the coords are off a bit from a cloudy day, you should be standing dead center) Multiply that number by the TOTAL number of star points from the previous step and add 271. This will give you the new last three digits for "N33 xx.xxx" coordinate.

Step 4-B Multiply the number of round windows by 66. Take the last five digits of the coordinate from Step 2-B (your W coordinate, "yy.yyy") and subtract this number. This gives you your new W coordinate. You're off and running!

  5. Step 5-A Did you make it to the right spot? Hope so... The rest of your trip depends on it! Subtract the date the structure was built from the date the sign was erected. Subtract 60 from the result and add it to your previous "N33" number. Now you have your new "N33 xx.xxx" number.

Step 5-B Count the letters of the three words (do not include spaces) that would complete this phrase: "father of the ___ ___ ___." Multiply that number by the date the sign was erected and add 1057, and you have your new "W086 xx.xxx" number.

  6. Step 6 Find the container! You will then have the coordinates to your next step. Be sure to write them down -- you will need them!

  7. Step 7-A Made it? Good! Count the number of iron flowers from the gate at your left to the car gate. Do NOT count the car gate. Add the LAST digit of your "N33" coordinates you found in Step 6 to the number of flowers. Subtract the resulting number from the "N33" container coords from Step 6 and you have your final "N33 xx.xxx" number.

Step 7-B Take the last five digits from the "W" coordinates you found in Step 6 and subtract the year of the epedemic. Now add the year this structure was restored. Subtract 22 and you have your final "W086 xx.xxx" number!

  8. Step 8 Find the container, and relax! You just got the same amount of exercise an average 5th grader would get during a math test and recess.
