Geocache Description:

Black Beauty

This book was written by Anna Sewell and published in 1877. The book follows the life of a horse from his birth to his last days. Throughout his life he has several different owners and they all treat him differently. He is put to work in different ways, fed and cared for differently, etc. Some of his owners are kind, some are harsh. So how does Beauty end his days? Does he lead a long and happy life? Is he treated poorly and his end is miserable? Is he shown compassion by his owners?

I just loved horses when I was younger so of course I loved this story. Comparing the different ways that Beauty was treated helps us understand how animals should be treated.

About this series

When I initially sat down and started writing down the titles of classic children’s books I soon found a very long list. I decided to limit myself to some that are books that I actually read when I was a child, most of which I read several times, and loved. I still had a hard time narrowing down my search. There are so many fabulous books out there and the classics are still read for a reason, they’re great literature! So dust off your library card and go check out some of these wonderful books. I am initially hiding 9 caches for the Waukesha Janboree and it was not easy to only choose 9 classic books. Maybe you could include in your log whether or not you’ve read the book and what you took away from it.

This cache was hidden for the 2014 Waukesha Janboree. Permission has been given by the Waukesha City Parks and Rec for the placement of this geocache. Please be respectful of the environment and remember that this is a very high traffic area and you will need to be stealthy so that the geocache isn’t muggled.
