Geocache Description:

A MUST SEE short stop along RT219 between Somerset, PA and Salisbury, PA, 10 miles from I68. Maybe you've seen these beasts on a clear day from I68 or as you drove along rt219. It's time you get close to these 300 feet tall wonders.

Ammo can placed June 13, 2011 with Army sunglasses, mini-etcha-sketch, flashlight, aluminum water bottle. Enjoy the swag...trade appropriatly please.

I was amazed the first time I came up here, and want you to be too.

Beautiful, fairly desolate place. Bring your camera! If anybody is there, which is rare, act like a photographer and walk to the cache only 180ft from where you can park. This is not meant to be a difficult cache, just one to get you up here to see the windfarm up close.

This is part of what I consider some of the most beautiful portion of the mid-Atlantic states. At 2800ft above sea level, the weather is similar to what would be found 400 miles North. The Rt219 corridor brings you close to the highest points in PA, MD and WV all within short access.

Interesting sidenote....Mt Davis( (visit link) (8 miles away) is the 'least-highest-high- point' of all the states considered part of 'appalachia' at Altitude 3213 feet above sea level.

This elevation brings with it extreme weather, high winds and cooler temps. It can frequently be snowing up here and raining just 500 ft below so be cautious.

When you first pull in you will see the first 3 of the 20 wind turbines that overlooks the small town of Meyersdale, PA. The Meyersdale Wind Energy Center began commercial operation in December 2003. It produces 30 MW of clean energy for use within the region, powering 10,000 homes. A single blade is 115 ft long and weighs 65,000 kgs.

DIRECTIONS:

Coming from the south on RT219 as you get within a mile or 2, you'll see the wind turbines lining the ridge above you. Once you start to climb up Mt Hunsrick the trees take over and you'll lose sight of them. About a mile or 2 up the hill turn right onto Clark Rd. At the "T" turn right onto Mountain Rd, drive through State Game Lands and at top of hill you can't miss the large parking area. Do not block gate and leave plenty of room for machinery that may need to get back to the turbines.

Coming from the North you'll see the Windmills on the left. Get off at Meyersdale Exit and turn right onto Mason Dixon Hwy. You'll climb up hill cross back over rt219 and head straight up. Continue up Mountain Rd, drive through State Game Lands and at top of hill you can't miss the large parking area. Do not block gate and leave plenty of room for machinery that may need to get back to the turbines.
