The walking path encircles the pond in Silverview Park. It is a nice, pleasant walk on a cool summer’s eve, but can be pretty bitter on a cold winter’s night. To add to the enjoyment, there’s a surprisingly diverse collection of waterfowl and other birds to be seen on or around the pond. I’ve seen great white herons, snowy egrets, green herons, loons, wood ducks, pied-billed grebes, pheasants, cedar waxwings, ...just to name a few. As an incentive for others to take a walk around the pond, I’ve hidden several caches along the way. Rather than trying out some diabolical ideas, I decided to make these fun caches that shouldn’t be too difficult to find. Instead, I’ve added a twist that I haven’t seen before with other caches. When I was a kid playing in a youth baseball league, we always had an end-of-season banquet. One year I won a baseball autographed by the New York Yankees. Although I wasn’t an autograph hound, the baseball fascinated me. I remember lying on my bed reading the names constantly for months afterwards; The names epitomized the Pride of the Yankees in the early 60's: Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris, Tony Kubek, Yogi Berra, Whitey Ford, Jim Bouton, Al Downing, Bobby Richardson, Bill Skowron, Joey Pepitone, Hector Lopez, Elston Howard, Clete Boyer, Johnny Blanchard, etc. I don’t think the year was 1961 but more likely ‘62 or ‘63. I still have that baseball - now in a protective holder, but most of the names have been worn off both by my grubby little hands and letting it roll around in a drawer for 30 years. Fortunately, I can still make out the Mantle and Maris signatures because they were signed on the sweet spots. I still treasure the ball to this day. I don’t know what it is about autographs, but people sure like to collect them. Even more so, I imagine, people are thrilled to be asked for their autograph. As a way of commemorating my first cache hide, I decided to collect everyone’s autograph by using an Autograph Book as the Official Log. I ask that you only leave one signature per page. (If you find as a group/family and would like to sign a single page as a group, that’s fine). Write BIG and include the date (and a salutation if you’d like - or not). I’ve included colored permanent markers for the signatures. This hide, an ammo box, is a little tougher to get to than the others around the pond to ensure that it isn’t muggled. When you log your visit online. please tell us about your favorite autograph if you have one. Here’s your chance for immortality!!! (Of course, the baseball is NOT included for the FTF!)
