Multicache langs een van de graffiti hotspots van Katwijk, met voorafgaand een rondleiding langs de uitwatering (waar de Rijn in de Noordzee overloopt).

This is the estuary of the Rhine, going into the North Sea. The Dutch word for this estuary or bay is "Watering".
Most of the locals are quite proud of this estuary, and it's even mentioned in the village's anthem:

Dit is het boezemgemaal. Dit is het grootste gemaal van Rijnland.
Dit gemaal, met een capaciteit van bijna 54 kubieke meter per seconde, voert het overtollige water af naar zee, en zorgt ervoor dat de waterstand binnen Rijnland op het juiste niveau blijft.
In 2008 werd begonnen met de bouw van een nieuwe gemaalunit naast het bestaande gemaal uit 1954. Er werd een elektrische pomp geplaatst en in 2009 was de nieuwe unit klaar en werd in werk gesteld.
Daarna zijn de pompen van het bestaande gemaal een voor een vervangen en kon tijdens de gehele renovatie altijd met drie pompen worden gemalen.
In 2011 was de vervanging van de pompen voltooid, waarna op 19 november 2011 het geheel feestelijk geopend werd en gasten verwelkomd werden door 'Napoleon', die daadwerkelijk ongeveer 200 jaar eerder het toenmalige gemaal bezocht.
Op het gemaal staat een beeld van Graaf Willem I.

This is called the Boezemgemaal. This is the biggest estuary pump of the "Rijnland" area. With it's capacity of pumping nearly 54 square meters per second, it discharges al the redundant water towards sea, maintaining proper water levels in "Rijnland".
In 2008 the building of a new unit was started next to the unit from 1954. An electrical pump was placed and in 2009 the new unit was fully operable.
After this completion the current pumps were partialy replaced and during this replacement there were always three pumps operable.
In 2011 the replacement was completed, followed by a festive opening where guests were received by 'Napoleon', who actulaly visited the estuary about 200 years ago.
On the gemaal is a statue of count Willem I.

Dit is het skatepark (ook wel fun-box genoemd) van Katwijk.
In combinatie met de "Wall of Fame" (volgende coordinaat) is dit park gebouwd om jongeren op een plek te houden, en zo het graffiti spuiten en skaten door het hele dorp tegen te gaan.

This was built in combination with the "Wall of Fame" (next coordinate) to keep young people in one spot, and so reducing graffiti and skating in the village.

En dan zijn we nu aangekomen bij de "Dirty Walls" waar deze cache zijn naam aan te danken heeft.
Grafitti spuiten is bij de wet verboden en de politie kan je hiervoor oppakken, maar niet als je het legaal doet!
Katwijk staat bekend om haar graffiti cultuur, zowel legaal als underground. Met name door de vele overlast van de "illegale kunstwerken" die in Katwijk worden gemaakt, is een aantal jaar geleden het project Ga Legaal opgezet. Dit project, geleid door jongerencentrum Scum (www.scumkatwijk.nl, het gebouw rechts van je), organiseert activiteiten voor jonge graffiti-artiesten om deze bewust te maken dat graffiti niet alleen illegaal kan.
Een van de projecten die georganiseerd werd door Ga Legaal was het bespuiten van de vuurtoren, ter gelegenheid van het bezoek van Koningin Beatrix op Koninginnedag 2000.
De vuurtoren van Katwijk, "De Vuurbaak", was ingepakt met een speciaal soort krimpfolie, waar de verf op gespoten werd. De voorstelling is Nederland, met een rood-wit-blauwe kijk op zee.
Tevens was er (rechts op de foto) een zeil van een boot bespoten met kleine visjes, welke van een afstand bekeken het gezicht van een Katwijkse vrouw voorsteld.
Bij Scum staat een 32 bij 2 meter grote muur, de "Wall of Fame". Deze muur is speciaal geplaatst voor graffiti-spuitend Katwijk en omstreken en wordt één keer per jaar grondig gereinigd en opnieuw in de plamuur gezet.

Making graffiti is forbidden by law and the police can arrest you for it, but not when you do this legaly!
Katwijk is known for it's graffiti cullture, legal as well as underground. Mainly because of the bother of these "illegal art" which were made in Katwijk, a few years ago the project "Ga Legaal" was set up. This project, lead by Scum (www.scumkatwijk.nl, the building to your right) organizes activities for young graffiti-artists to make them conscious of the fact that graffiti can also be performed legaly.
One of the projects organized bij Ga Legaal was painting the Lighthouse, to celebrate the queen's birthday in 2000.

The Lighthouse, called "De Vuurbaak", was wrapped in a special shrinking foil, on which was painted.
The concept is The Netherlands, with al look at sea in the colours of the flag (red, white blue striped).
There also was (in the right side of the picture) a ship's sail, painted with small fishes, which from a distance showed the face of a typical Katwijk woman.
There's a 32 by 2 meter wall at Scum, the "Wall of Fame". This wall is placed especialy for graffiti-making Katwijk and close cities and is cleaned and revised once every year.
