A Pirate’s Tale: I Spy

I tell ye this tale from a long time ago
when I was a wee lad of 7 or so.
A ship’s mate was I on a fine sailing vessel
when along came a ship seeking a tustle.
Well our lady was strong but she were no match
for the mighty Sea Wolf and her cruel Captain Atch,
That man and his crew of 150 or so
plundered our ship and in flames let her go.
Most of my crew mates were feed to the ocean
but as I were so young Cap’n Atch felt emotion,
so drawing his blade though my life to take,
he knelt real close and quietly spake,

“Boy I’ll let yer live if ye come sail wit’ me
as I plunder & pillage this great salty sea
I’ll even train you to next Cap'n be
and when I die my treasure I’ll leave to thee”.

For 12 years I sailed with that ornery crew
learnin' and livin' the way pirates do.
Bidin’ my time I did wait to betray
patiently plotting 'till one fateful day.
The Sea Wolf lay still at Astoria's dock,
I guarded the ship and walked the night watch.
As the Captain and crew after 3 months at sea
went to find rum and to seek a “lady”
I waited 'till everyone was well drunk
then I stole the Cap'n's key and raided his trunk
to take what I could and deprive from his pleasure
50 long years of his personal treasure
coins, trinkets and jewellry and rare artefact
I took from that old wooden trunk that I sacked.
Then I left right away 'cause I knew as I fled
if I ever were caught I would quickly be dead.
With the mighty Columbia as my guide
I travelled 8 months trying to hide
in a small canoe I moved only by night,
seeking shelter by day so to stay out of sight.
I fled over rapids and through the great Gorge,
around the "Big Bend" and then I travelled north.
I finally slowed down 'cross a national line
hoping life would be quiet north o' 49.
Then I lay low so as not to be found
in an old miner's shack half dug into the ground,
but after a time when supplies had run low
I emerged from my shack now all covered with snow.
Takin’ a survey to east and to west
I knew I was safe when my eyes did rest
on a quaint little place bein’ built 'side a stream
with it's rocks and ravines 'twas a hidin’ man's dream.
I quickly moved in to that blue collar town
and built me a house where I could look down.
For though I was beginnin’ to feel more secure,
I knew Atch would persist so I had to be sure
that if ever the Cap’n or his men came a searchin’,
I’d see ‘em come and I’d teach ‘em a lesson
In fightin’ and killin’. I’d be gettin’ revenge,
the lives of those countless victims avenge.
After I’d made my defense preparation,
I got on to the business of layin’ foundation.
I got me a job and I found me a wife
for I was intent on buildin’ a life
far away from the sea and all it’s trama,
in hopes it would cure all of my midnight drama.
For 4 years I lived in quiet existence
‘till one day I noticed a person suspicious
so quickly I made my way out of view
then carefully spied one of the Sea Wolf's crew .
I made my way home with my ticker a racin'
then tried to calm down to see what I was facin'
all afternoon and through most of the evenin'
I mustered my might and made plans for quick leavin'.
Before the sun rose I made good on my pledge,
I sought out the crewman and measured revenge,
then carefully carried the body away
and disposed of it before the light of the next day.
I quickly decided I had to act wisely
as I hoped to protect my wife and new baby.
I stayed up long nights coming up with a plan
to scatter the treasure throughout this land.
I gathered my tools and worked through 5 days
hidin’ the loot through this stretch o' Kootenays.
Once again I layed low and took care to see
whether anyone else would come searchin’ for me.
When I thought it was safe I devised a deception
so Cap'n would think I had died 'n stop searchin'.
I went west so to work as a man underground
then I staged an explosion that shook the whole ground
and made sure it was known under all o' that rock
lay crushed the body o' young Simon Blackstock.
In case my deceit the Cap'n realize
I paid for the newspaper to publicize:

The unfortunate life and untimely demise
of a drunken young Briton who spun crazy lies
that he were, "A pirate who served with a crew
who had plundered and wasted a dozen or two
of the finest of trade ships that sailed the east seas
and made off with their loot so to do as they please"
and how he had "lifted his Captain's life treasure
and so deprived the old man of his pleasure"
but because of his likin' of livin' so fine
he had spent all that gain on women and wine
and so in an ending that seemed well to fit
the Englishman died by a fuse he had lit.

To my home returned I after a fortnight
to live out this life with my children and wife
I'd kept it a secret all of my day
and 'till 30 years past my passing away
As for this tale it's to you to decide
if what I have spoken is just one great big lie
whether I've told the truth so to know
you'll need to solve this passage below:

Walk east on TOP ‘til starboard you see
in the distance a rock monster starin’ at thee

when the monster looms large you MUST face your foe
don’t be afraid to stand toe to toe

Tried this one in April but the snow was the winner that time. This time we were able to get to the first stage without incident.
Really enjoyed this very creative cache and the necessary "steps" to locate the treasure. Fantastic

Left a loonie as that was about the most "foreign" currency we had at the time.

Many thanks for the fun cache K is for Crazy.
